idly (adv.)

do you ever just, you know,
idly think about the state of this country,
some of its people, its press, its leaders -
how much they're getting away with,
how much they don't care about anyone
who's different from them in any way,
how much they will keep at it,
how much you will endure, survive, overcome.

idly because there's a laptop in front of you
and a song plays on one of the 23 tabs
and you're acutely aware of a to-do list
but you continue to rest your head
on your folded knee, and stare at the screen
as you play with your hair
when you happen to notice your
overgrown toenails, and decide they need
to be trimmed immediately,
if for nothing then to break
that chain of thought.
