secrets of the universe

what is it about looking at the night sky
that offers the larger meaning of life?
cataloguing stars into constellations,
realising what 'midnight blue' looks like
only when you discern the shadowed outline
of a half moon from the clear sky,
working out which unblinking dot is saturn
(or is that in fact jupiter?)
and watching the moon sink
into the horizon, if you linger.

why is it that staring into an infinite space
that will continue to exist after you are long gone
makes you feel important,
but looking at the brick-like cells on an onion peel
through a microscope which exists because of you
makes you feel meaningless?
